Burundi Muyinga Kavugangoma

Burundi Muyinga Kavugangoma

Farm Description

Washing station Kavugangoma gets its name from the hill on which it is located in the Muyinga Province. "Kavugangoma" literal translation is "sound of the drums". The station serves more than 2000 farmers in the area, growing and hand-picking coffee on land adjacent to their homes. Water comes from the nearby, mountain-fed stream, and is run through state of the art filtration system before being reintroduced. The coffees we picked up this year are from the different hills surrounding Kavugangoma, or "collines". Coffee in the area is grown at an average of 1700 meters, it's all Bourbon, fully washed, and meticulously hand sorted along the way.

This coffee is part of our Farm Gate pricing program.

Cupping Notes

A smell of baked sugar and cinnamon stick permeate from the ground coffee of City roasts, and deeper bittersweetness with a vanilla bean accent in our Full City roast. The wet grounds develop a ginger cookie smell - molasses, candied ginger, and cinnamon - and breaking the crust lets off a delicate scent of loose leaf teas. Cup flavors at a City follow suit, English Breakfast and Darjeeling tea notes lead with simple syrup like sweetness underneath. These tea-like characteristics are clean, well defined, and perceived acidity mimics the mouthfeel of tannins found in black tea too. Notes of apple, dried ginger, and mace spice come up as the cup cools, subtle, and delicate in nature. The presence of fruited notes increases with deeper roasting, stone fruits come to mind, and intermingle nicely with a "Tootsie Roll" like flavor. Being a bigger-bodied Burundi, this is one is a great single origin espresso option, distilled chocolate and fruit flavors, and a bittersweetness that won't quit.
